How Not to Get Ripped Off When Buying a Used Car

Hello, my name is Dwane Johansen and I’m one of the owners of Sun Toyota in New Port Richey, Florida. Sun Toyota is one of the largest pre-owned dealers in the country, and we sell more Toyota Certified Used Vehicles than any other dealer in the southeast. It’s no secret that used car dealers have an unshakable reputation for shady deals, dishonest stunts, dirty tricks, tomfoolery, shenanigans, and other undesirable actions that you should never have to deal with. Fortunately, not all used car dealers are guilty of these dreaded sins. There truly are a group of committed, ethical, honest, good, and professional independent car dealers out there who are actually looking out for your best interest.

Unfortunately, a few bad apples have spoiled the business for those of us who run a tight ship and an honest operation. Because there are a few bad apples out there, my personal advice to you is to arm yourself with as much information as possible about the scams the dishonest dealers try to pull so you can spot them a mile away and run down the street to another dealer who really deserves your business. The problem is in knowing how to spot the bad dealers and in being able to identify their tricks and scams. Below, I have listed the most common scams the bad guys like to pull. When you see one of these games being played, run the other direction!

Be on the lookout for the following tricks and scams!

SCAM #1: The fees! Dealer Fee, Administration Fee, Processing Fee, etc.

Dealer preparation fees are extra charges that the dealer adds to get the car ready for delivery. Dealers will tell you this fee will represent costs and profits to the dealer for items such as inspecting, cleaning and adjusting new and used vehicles and preparing documents related to the sale. The dealership does need to spend time taking care of these details so you can drive your new car home. However, these fees should be included in the dealers cost of doing business.

Documentation fees, which cover the costs of processing all the paperwork associated with a new car purchase, are something you don’t need to pay. A few states charge a flat fee for this item that is typically well under $100. Other states have no specific requirements, so a dealer can charge whatever it wants. These fees can range from as low as $49 all the way up to the $899 range. The simple fact is these fees are just additional profit to the dealer. Don’t pay the dealer these additional fees.

SCAM #2: Bump and Grind

This little gem is a classic “negotiating” tactic used in car dealerships across the country, and probably the world. It goes something like this:

• You finally find the vehicle you’re looking for and you decide to make an offer.

• In your mind the offer is a little low – but still seems fair. You’re willing to move a little bit, but don’t want to show your cards.

• You present your offer to the salesperson – he shakes his head. Here comes the story!

Then the salesman explains to you that he’s on your side, but he thinks he might get fired if he went to his manager with your low offer. He goes on to ponder the situation and decides that if you would just increase your offer by a little bit, maybe $200, he could take it to his manager. Being the reasonable person you are, you agree to increase your offer by $200. Heck, you were willing to pay a little more anyway! That’s bump number one, now comes "the grind."

• The salesperson disappears for 10 minutes or so.

• He says he’s going to go talk to his manager, but he tells a joke instead.

• He then takes a coffee break, visits the restroom, and has a quick smoke!

All the while, you’re sitting there believing he’s in the office “grinding” away for your benefit trying to work out the best price. You may even think to yourself that you’re a great negotiator and really have these guys working for your business. Think again! A few minutes go by and he comes back to where you’re waiting. “Aw shucks,” he says. “I thought $200 would do it, but I guess I was being a little optimistic, it’s gotta be more like $500 or the boss won’t even consider it.” At this point you have so much invested that you’re no longer willing to walk away, so you agree. There’s the second bump! The game can continue round after round through the price negotiation, trade appraisal, credit approval, add-ons, and more. In the end, much like a casino, the house always wins. When you spot the bump and grind routine going on, that’s a sure bet that you’ll wind up paying more than you wanted to!

How to avoid the bump and grind scam:

• Indicate the fact that you’re wise to typical car dealer games.

• Explain that you don’t think they’re that kind of dealer, but you’ll be on the look out nevertheless.

• Negotiate directly with the Sales Manager as a way to avoid the possibility of any bump and grind tactics.

By doing that, you’ll effectively shut down their negotiating engine and they’ll be forced to deal with old fashioned face to face selling. That’s what you deserve!

SCAM #3: Bad Credit Scam

After you’ve found the car and the price has been negotiated, you’ll usually enter the credit approval phase. This is where you complete a loan application which is forwarded to the finance department for approval. These days, approval can be rapid. Smart and honest dealers develop strong, valuable relationships with local, regional, and national lenders in order to provide their customers with the most elegant financing choices available. Dirty bird dealers use the finance process as another way to squeeze more dollars out of your bank account!

Here's how it works:

• The salesperson returns with your application looking all disheveled and frustrated.

• She explains that your credit wasn’t exactly as good as they thought it would be – and that they weren’t able to obtain financing through their preferred source.

• Your heart sinks and face turns red.

You’re embarrassed. You’re worried that you may have wasted all of this time and now you won’t be approved. This is a point of minor desperation for most people so naturally you start to explain your virtues to the sales person. "I pay all of my bills on time, this must be some sort of a mix up or mistake!" you nervously explain. She then tells you she’s going to have one last conversation with the finance manager to see what can be done. She says she's going to “go to bat for you”, but in actuality this is nothing but a coffee or smoke break. In the meantime, you’re sweating bullets and wondering how you screwed up your credit. At this point, you’re just hoping you can get approved! Ten minutes later, she comes back with a smile on her face. “Great news! I pushed my finance manager and made him call in a favor with another bank. He’s able to get your loan approved."

Relief! What she didn’t tell you was that the interest rate is two points higher than it should be. In many cases, bad dealers will misrepresent your ability to be properly financed. For instance, if you have A credit, they’ll tell you that you have B credit. If you have B credit, they’ll tell you C. They’ll use this as an excuse to mark up your interest rate to above competitive levels. But after the stunt, you feel lucky to get approved at all. You’ll take the loan no matter what and they know it! How do they do it? It’s all emotional. You pay the price over the life of the loan via a higher interest rate than what you deserve.

How to beat the bad credit scam:

• Get a copy of your credit report before you begin shopping for a car from Equifax, Transunion and Experian.

• Have a solid understanding of your credit score and what it means so that you won’t have the wool pulled over your eyes.

• Get a rate quote from your bank or credit union to use as a comparison at the dealership.

A savvy dealer can often beat the rate of your bank or credit union – but a dishonest dealer will convince you that you need to pay much more. Using a comparative rate as a benchmark will keep any interest rate games from being played. Ask your dealer for your Risk Based Pricing Notice. This is a notice that will show your credit score, the source of the credit report, and the date that the credit was reviewed. Car dealers deserve to make money for the service they provide, but you don’t deserve to pay an erroneously marked up interest rate either!

SCAM #4: Life Insurance Scam

There you are, sitting in the finance office, dotting I’s and crossing T’s, barely paying attention. The finance manager slips in a Credit Life Insurance policy. “It’s standard,” he explains. “It’s simply to protect your family in the case that you pass away before this loan is paid off.”

True! This policy will pay off your loan for you if you kick the bucket before you pay off the loan. That could be a good thing for your family if you’re not otherwise insured. But, it’s not standard, it’s not required, and it’s not for everyone. Credit Life Insurance is not required and is your choice to include it or not. It’s up to you. You should request a full presentation of the features and benefits of the policy and then talk it over with your family, taking your existing insurance coverage into consideration before making a decision. Under no circumstance should this be snuck in or presented as a mandatory item!

SCAM #5: Keys on the Roof

You may have heard a similar story before. It’s no wives' tail – this really happens. You come into the dealership with your existing vehicle to have it appraised for a trade in value. An hour goes by and you still haven’t gotten your keys back. Eventually, you’re ready to leave. Perhaps you haven’t struck a deal on the car you want? The sales person explains that the guy who has your keys is at lunch and won’t be back for an hour and his office is locked so you can’t leave yet. “Why not test-drive another car?”

This is just a horrible excuse to keep you around the dealership longer. They know that the more time you invest, the more committed you become, and the more likely you are to agree to terms you aren’t really comfortable with. In the most extreme cases, people have virtually been held hostage at dealerships for hours on end waiting to get their keys back. Another variation of this trick is for them to request your driver’s license before letting you take a test drive. Then, when you want to leave, they can’t find it, etc. A lot of “car guys” laugh about this sort of thing, but it shouldn’t happen at any respectable dealership.

How to keep this from happening to you:

• Bring two sets of keys to your vehicle.

• Make photocopies of your driver’s license and only give them the photocopy.

• If you get into a bad situation, get in your car and drive away.

• Call the police and tell them that the dealership tried to steal your car. You’ll get your keys back in no time flat.

Follow these guidelines and it will be impossible for them to hold you hostage!

A Final Thought On Scams

Of course there are many other scams, but these are the most common. I’ve included these common scams and ways to avoid them. By learning about these scams, you’ll be able to spot the others a mile away! However, I would like to point out that the most effective way to avoid these scams all together is to find a reputable, ethical, honest dealer whom you can trust and depend upon. Someone who has proven their commitment to your well-being and satisfaction, who stands up for what is right and demonstrates an unwavering sense of consumer concern. Look for someone who presents them self as an expert in the car business and a consumer-minded person. When all of these conditions are met, you have found an appropriate dealership worthy of your business!

HOLIDAY - The new showroom of Sun Toyota is taking shape in the Holiday area with a host of trend-setting, environmentally friendly features.

The $24 million project at U.S. 19 and Gulf Trace Boulevard is on track to finish by late summer, according to Dwane Johansen, the dealership's managing general partner.

Owned by Johansen and Jeff Cadwell, Sun Toyota has been family owned and operated since 1972 and celebrate its 40th anniversary next year.

Sun Toyota typically sells the most Toyota vehicles in the region, despite its relatively cramped quarters at the northwest corner of the S.R. 54-U.S. 19 intersection.

Some long-time customers have bought eight cars over the years from Sun Toyota, Johansen said. "Some of our customers bring in their whole family" to shop for vehicles, he said.

Sun Toyota already is the largest Toyota Certified Used Car dealer in the five-state Southeast region. The new facility could propel Sun to number one in the nation, its owners believe.

The new-car showroom will move out of the existing 30,000-square-foot building. The new building will have about 80,000 square feet. Its 43-bay service area will be twice the size of the current facility.

The existing site then will be dedicated to used-vehicles.

With the economy continuing to sputter, "Everyone said this isn't the right time" to build, Johansen said. But he thought it was an ideal time, since construction costs and interest rates remain low.

In addition, the 40 to 50 employees Sun Toyota is planning to hire could give the Pasco economy a bit of a boost.

Johansen is equally excited by all the green features at the new site to boost energy efficiency while easing the burden on nature.

Sun Toyota aims to get LEED certification, the gold standard in green technology. The U.S. Green Building Council set up the program for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Johansen puts his money where his mouth is, driving a hybrid Toyota Highlander, which gets about 28 miles per gallon on his commute between Tarpon Springs and Holiday.

So the dealership is sparing no expense to use cutting-edge technology at the new building. The extra expense might add up to $1 million onto the cost of the project.

"I think that's as cool as it gets," Johansen said of the solar panels that will cover the roof. The panels, the latest type available, will cut down the energy use at the new building by as much as 25 percent.

The LED lighting will emit virtually no heat, producing additional energy savings. Turbine-type air conditioners are more efficient as well, Johansen said.

The dealership will even have bicycle racks for workers who live close enough to pedal to the site. Shower rooms will be available for them to freshen up.

"I'm a tree nut," Johansen said. He often putters around the yard of his home tending to flowers. It grieved Johansen that some 100 trees had to be removed to make room for the new building. He made sure 300 replacement trees were planted elsewhere. A lot of decorative trees such as palm trees will appear on the new lot, along with hardwoods.

Joe Reth, Sun Toyota general manager, said the dealership helped pay to realign the U.S. 19-Gulf Trace Boulevard intersection and put up traffic signals. The changes could be a boon for traffic heading to and from Gulf Trace Elementary School. Sun Toyota works with the school on various projects, Reth said, most recently a Rock the FCAT event before students took the standardized tests. When the new showroom is completed, Reth hopes to arrange for school field trips so students can witness the green technology.

The company paid for construction of the road that will curve around behind the dealership and link into the existing Gulf Trace Boulevard, Reth said. A large retention pond will border the road.

Reth marveled at how large the new site will be, some 30 acres compared to about four acres at the current site.

During a tour of the construction zone, Michael Chaparro, new-car sales manager, emphasized other features:

•Some of the concrete will allow water to seep into the soil beneath it.
•The car wash will recycle more than 90 percent of the water it uses.
•Water condensed by air conditioning units will be captured.
•Up to 86,000 gallons of rainwater to irrigate landscaping can be stored.
•The floor will be made up of 60 percent recycled glass, and the walls will use 60 percent recycled concrete fabricated on site.
•Carpeting will be made from ethanol.

"There are so many little things you can do," Johansen said about the building's green features. "We've just got to do it. It's going to be the right thing."

I had a terrific car buying experience. The funny part is that I was NOT going to buy another Toyota and had decided I needed a change of pace, but for several reasons, I ended up back at Sun again. LOL

My salesman, Ed Welch was really terrific. We communicated by text regularly for updates, and he has responded well even post sale to my many questions. He is a sharp young kid. Make sure you keep him and make him happy. Really great.

Keri in finance was terrific and she even got me a rate 3/4 of a percentage point lower than I had with my credit union, and I had shopped around for that rate! She was extremely personable also.

I can't remember the gal who sold me the accessories, but she was also very nice as was you accessories scheduler who saw me for the tint.

Bottom line is that everyone I came in contact with at Sun was terrific. You have a great group there and they all were smiling and helpful. Keep it up.

Toyota believes that motor vehicles, and the mobility they provide, contribute to the betterment of society. With that in mind, the Toyota Community Relations and Interactive Marketing departments are proud to announce the launch of “100 Cars for Good,” an exciting new social media philanthropy campaign. With this program, Toyota will award 100 cars in 100 days to 100 deserving non-profit organizations. But we're not deciding... who will win the vehicles...we're letting the public direct our giving!

Beginning May 9, each day for 100 days, 5 non-profit organizations will compete for votes from the general public on Toyota's Facebook page. The organization with the most votes at the end of each day will be awarded a Toyota vehicle to enhance their philanthropic efforts. The four runner-up organizations will be given a consolation prize of $1,000. Each day, a new set of 5 non-profits will compete for a vehicle, which will include a Vehicle Service Agreement for six years or 100,000 miles, free of charge from TFS.

On Monday, March 7, Toyota will begin accepting applications from non-profit organizations across the U.S. Applications will be accepted for 2 weeks, or until 5,000 applications are received. The application will be located on Toyota’s Facebook page and any nonprofit organization with a 501(c)3 tax-exempt status number can apply. All they have to do is provide some basic information about their organization, and include a short essay explaining how they would use a Toyota vehicle for good.

A third-party panel of experts in the area of philanthropy will determine the final 500 non-profit organizations that will ultimately compete for the 100 vehicles.

Update on Toyota Recalls

Transportation Secretary LaHood: “no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. Period.”

After a 10-month “exhaustive, thorough” study of Toyota’s electronic throttle controls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and NASA reported today they found no evidence that electronics were to blame for alleged unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.

“So let me be clear: the jury is back. The verdict is in. There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. Period,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told a packed news conference in Washington, D.C.

LaHood said NHTSA and NASA rigorously examined nine vehicles, poured over 280,000 lines of software codes and bombarded the vehicles with electro-magnetic radiation and found no flaws in Toyota’s electronic systems.

The report noted that the only car-based causes of alleged acceleration incidents were trapped floor mats and sticking pedals that have been addressed by Toyota’s recalls.

Based on findings in the study, LaHood said NHTSA is considering new regulations to improve the safety of vehicles, including requiring brake override systems, standardizing keyless ignition systems and requiring event data recorders on all new vehicles.

“We believe this rigorous scientific analysis by some of America's finest engineers should further reinforce confidence in the safety of Toyota and Lexus vehicles,” said Steve St. Angelo, Toyota’s Chief Quality Officer for North America, in a statement on the report. “We will continue to develop and equip Toyota and Lexus vehicles with industry-leading safety technologies, including many based on breakthroughs in sophisticated electronics systems. We will also continue to cooperate fully with NHTSA and respected outside experts in order to help ensure that our customers have the utmost confidence in the safety and reliability of our vehicles.”

2004 Toyota Tundra featured in "The Benchwarmers"

This customized 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup is instantly recognizable to anyone who recalls the hilarious scene in the comedy picture “The Benchwarmers”, in which Reggie Jackson conducts his players on a tour of the neighborhood for the time-honored American tradition of mailbox batting practice. What's New About the NHTSA Reporting?

The previous NHTSA system only reported the results of each category seperately. The new system adds a single overall vehicle safety score designed to be more consumer-friendly. The score ranges from one to five stars, based on the vehicle's overall performance.

Eventually, the Monroney lable will be updated to show the overall star rating. The label is also expected to display whether the stability control, lane-departure warning and frontal-collision warning are standard or avialable on that vehicle. However, the new label is still being designed and won't be released for some time.

What's New about the NHTSA Testing?

For the frontal-impact tests, advanced dummies are used. These include a female in the front passenger seat, providing a broader range of body weights and sizes for the vehicle's systems to protect. And the dummies use refined criteria to determine injury potential. Additionally, knee, hip and thigh injury potential are taken into consideration.

Side-impact tests include a new pole-impact test, which stimulates wrapping the vehicle around a tree or utility pole. These tests use the same advanced dummy designs found in the frontal-impact tests, along with refined injury criteria. The side-impact tests include passenger-injury potential, but the new pole-impact tests only covers driver-injury potential.

The rollover test remains the same.

Why did the NHTSA Change the Crash Test Rating System?

When the crash-test ratings were introduced in 1979, fewer than 30% of cars tested received four or five stars. By 2007 that percentage had risen to 97%, making the ratings less meaningful since most cars had improved enough to score highly. By raising the bar, NHTSA hopes to spur further improvements in crash protection.

People know Toyota offers a great value. Vut what does "value" really mean? Where does it come from? How is it measured? And how does Toyota value compare with what other companies offer?

At its simplest, value is what you get in return for what you give, realitve to your other choices. To use a simple example, if one of your choices is a one-liter bottle of cola for $2 and the other choice is a two-liter bottle for $3, which gets you more cola for each dollar give? The two-liter bottle is a better value than the one-liter bottle: 50% more give (from $2 to $3) will get 100% more cola (from one liter to two liters).

Toyota is the top winner in motorist-voted awards

Call them the People's Choice Awards of the automotive world.

The winners of the Motorist Choice Awards, which are chosen by actual car buyers, were released Wednesday.

The winners are the result of 42,000 consumer surveys and data collected by IntelliChoice, which analyzes automotive ownership cost and car values, and the automotive research firm AutoPacific.

A first for this year, the awards were broken into 15 popular lifestyle categories that shoppers identify with, rather than the alternatives based on vehicle size, price and other such factors.

"These awards are a good reflection of the perceptions of the American consumer; showing what they want to drive and why they want to drive it," said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.

Despite a torrent of bad publicity stemming from recalls, Lexus and its parent company, Toyota, came away with 10 of a possible 30 awards.

Each category had two picks: one "popular" and one "premium". Here are a few of the Toyota winners:

Eco-Friendly: Prius

Kid-Friendly: Sequoia

Road Trip: Sienna

City Car: Yaris

There was a time, not long ago, when cars were the only option for taking your family on a cross-state or cross-continent road trip. Sure, you could drive a pickup truck, but there was no such vehicle as the minivan, the SUV or the now-famous everything-to-everyone crossover.

A two-door sports coupe packed with a swimsuit, sunscreen and a smile was life in the fast lane. For a family with children, your choice was either a four-door sedan or the design most capable of putting fear into the hearts of American consumers and automakers in today’s market: a station wagon.

While the halcyon days of piling into the back of a station wagon are long gone, even a family sedan can inspire togetherness, a camp song or two, or a heart-to-heart with your spouse (while the kids snooze). For a longer haul, you might consider the quieter, more refined ride that an SUV or a crossover offers. Many have backseat DVD players for the kids and enough cup holders to make thirsty tikes happy. With only two doors and space for a little luggage, traveling in a coupe becomes more intimate and, for the most part, fun! Here is one of my current favorite vehicles for a road trip.

2011 Toyota Camry

Put aside all the recent bad press and realize one thing: The Toyota Camry is one of the most dependable, accommodating, and user-friendly four-door family sedans on the road today. Period! Yes, the issues at Toyota are real, and the company's lack of concentration has been obvious recently, but you would still be hard-pressed to find a better all-around sedan than the Toyota Camry.

A choice of three unique performance packages powers Camry for 2011. The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve dual VVT-I churns out 169 horsepower and 167 lb.-ft. of torque. Move up one notch to a 3.5-liter V6 DOHC 24-valve dual VVT-I and your reward is 268 hp and 248 lb.-ft. of torque. For those looking to minimize their carbon footprint, the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder hybrid powers with 147 hp and 138 lb.-ft of torque.

What waits inside is a logical layout, comfortable seating for five, easy-to-use dials and switches, great outward visibility and an excellent driving experience. Headroom, legroom, shoulder room and trunk room is all top-of-the-class. So too is safety with standard VSC, ABS, EBD, Brake Force and multiple airbags including one for the driver’s knee. It is no surprise the Toyota Camry remains a success story in North America and an excellent car for your next family adventure.
